The SOCAN Foundation Composer Mentorship Program with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada (NYO Canada) is an exceptional opportunity for emerging Canadian composers aged 35 and under. This program supports one selected composer annually, providing them with an unparalleled experience to workshop their orchestral composition with the NYO Canada during the summer.

The selected composer benefits from invaluable mentorship from the NYO Canada Music Director, honing their craft through direct engagement with one of Canada’s most prestigious orchestral ensembles. As part of this opportunity, the composer will be commissioned by NYO Canada to create a new orchestral work, which may be performed on tour with the ensemble, showcasing their talent to audiences across Canada and beyond.

Program Benefits

  • Commissioned Work: The selected composer will create a new orchestral piece for a large orchestra, designed without soloist(s) or choir, and running between 6-10 minutes in duration. This provides a significant platform for artistic expression and professional development.
  • Rehearsal Participation: The composer will have the opportunity to engage directly with the orchestra by attending at least one rehearsal of their piece during the NYO Canada summer residency, offering a hands-on experience in preparing their work for live performance.
  • Premiere Performance: The commissioned work will be premiered during the NYO Canada summer tour, with the option for the composer to attend this milestone event, experiencing firsthand the audience’s reception of their work.
  • Access to Mentorship: Throughout the composition and rehearsal process, the selected composer will receive ongoing guidance and support from the NYO Canada administration and the Music Director, enriching their professional growth and understanding of orchestral music.
  • Networking Opportunities: During the summer residency, the composer will meet and collaborate with peers, fostering valuable connections within the music community that can inspire and facilitate future artistic collaborations.

Additional Support

Travel and accommodation are provided for Canadian-based composers participating in the program, ensuring they can focus fully on their creative process. Additionally, the composer selected to commission the work will receive a commission fee in accordance with current rates established by the Canadian League of Composers, recognizing their effort and supporting their artistic endeavors.

This program is designed to empower emerging Canadian composers to excel in the challenging and rewarding art of writing for a full orchestra. By providing mentorship, resources, and performance opportunities, the SOCAN Foundation and NYO Canada are committed to fostering the next generation of innovative and impactful composers in Canada.
