The Canadian New Music Workshop is a distinguished program designed to support and showcase the work of three mid-career Canadian composers. Hosted by the Glenn Gould School (GGS) New Music Ensemble, this program provides selected composers the unique opportunity to develop and refine their compositions in collaboration with an exceptionally skilled ensemble. The workshop offers a high-achieving environment where composers are present and receive in-depth feedback on their work throughout the process. This setting encourages a productive exchange that benefits both the composer and the musicians. Each composer receives one hour each with the ensemble, culminating in a high-quality audio-video capture of the session.

Composers in this program gain the opportunity to write for a 15-player large chamber ensemble—a highly prized format in contemporary music. This ensemble size, recognized internationally, allows composers to create works that align with global standards and equips them with recordings suitable for future performances and submissions worldwide.

Intended for mid-career composers who have established a professional career in composition and achieved notable artistic recognition, the program targets individuals still advancing their practice and trajectory within the contemporary music landscape. Composers selected for the program are primed for further artistic growth and expanded visibility. Selected composers participating in this program cannot also apply to other SOCAN Foundation programs for support of the creation of the work that is being read.

Eligibility is open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents residing in Canada. Travel and accommodation costs are fully covered, with an additional $500 honorarium to cover incidentals. The Canadian New Music Workshop underscores a commitment to nurturing new Canadian music, fostering the artistic evolution of mid-career composers, and contributing to the vibrancy of Canada’s contemporary music scene.
