General Guidelines

Applications must be submitted to the SOCAN Foundation before the start date of the activity.

Applicants may submit no more than one (1) application per program per year, except for the Professional Development Assistance grant.

Preference will be given to activities beneficial to several Canadian songwriters, composers, lyricists or music publishers.

In most cases the SOCAN Foundation supports only a small percentage of an applicant’s activity budget.

Activities may be local, regional, national or international in scope.

Applications for commissioning of works, radio or audio-visual productions, recording projects or purchase of instruments or equipment are ineligible.

Conditions of Grant Payment

Grant recipients presenting activities that include performance of music are expected to insure that at least 50 percent of the total duration of works performed are written (or arranged, in the case of public-domain works) by Canadian songwriters, composers and lyricists.

Applicants must agree to all terms and conditions, including terms and conditions listed in the application.

Grant recipients are expected to acknowledge the financial support of the SOCAN Foundation by reproducing the current SOCAN Foundation logo (available from our download page) on all promotional materials: print and electronic communications, and web sites (with hyperlink to socanfoundation.ca).

Grant recipients are expected to provide due credit to the SOCAN Foundation during media conferences or other public events connected with the activity.
If requested, grant recipients presenting events will provide two complimentary tickets to the SOCAN Foundation.
Grant recipients that are SOCAN licensees will provide a copy of their latest SOCAN statement/invoice.

Grant recipients will provide a final report to the SOCAN Foundation. Applicants can access the final report online (socan.smartsimple.ca). This final report is compulsory and must be submitted within 18 months of the grant-approval date.

Annual Operation applicants shall submit the final report within 13 months of the approval date.

However, for the Travel Assistance Grant and Professional Development Assistance Grant, final reports must be submitted within 6 weeks of the activity completion date, or the grant will automatically be cancelled.

SOCAN Foundation will not issue grant payment where an applicant’s final reports or SOCAN licence fees (if applicable) are overdue.

SOCAN Foundation reserves the right to adjust grant payments or cancel any or all payments or request return of payments issued if an activity has not generally been carried out as outlined in the application.
